★★★★☆

You can watch Among Wolves for free on Tubi and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It takes a little bit to get going as they paint some of the back story. Even though it starts out with a mass killing you are kind of wondering just what is going on.

So very few westerns are done right these days. See my review of Badland Doves for more information on that. This one did it right. Good camera work. (They didn’t try to shoot it with one iPhone!) They got the details right when it came to furniture and place. Must have used an old Western movie lot because none of the buildings looked “new built.”

Great Period for a Western

Thankfully there was a tiny bit of lead-in text setting the period. This movie takes place around the end of Prohibition. It was kind of weird to see someone talking on the telephone in a Western. When they said Prohibition the mental image was Chicago and the Valentine’s Day Massacre.

You know, people driving around in automobiles, electric lights, movie theaters. One forgets that was really only Chicago and a few other major cities. The rest of the country, especially the south west, was still people on horseback and carrying humble old 6-shooters. No Tommy Guns here.

The Acting Was Phenom

Awesome to see Tom Berenger briefly appear as Father Callahan. Love it when movies find a role for him because he can act, even when he is not acting.

Trace Adkins really pulled off the role of Micheal (The Ghost) whose clients recognized him only by his voice. He really pulled off the “I don’t enjoy killing, but I’m good at it” character.

The real shocker was Spenser Locke. She had a whiney simpering scared girl role and she managed to own it. There is something that girl can do with the look in her eyes that just delivers when it needs to.

Among Wolves Summary

Even if I had to pay for it in a theater this is a movie that would not leave me felling cheated. For the price of just sitting through the commercials it is damned fine entertainment.
