★★★★☆
Seventh Son turned out to be really enjoyable. I hadn’t heard anything about it before the impulse rental. Was quite glad I rented it. I must say, for a guy who announced he retired from acting a few years ago Jeff Bridges seems to be making quite a few movies. Critics seem to be panning most of his movies, always in search of the Oscar level performance instead of just a good time. While we all need the occasional Oscar level movie, most of us simply need a good time far more often. Let us not forget escapism is why most people read a book or watch a movie.
Julianne Moore is excellent in this film. The English language, or at least my command of it, fails to provide words or phrases to describe that certain quality she brings to a project. One can see it on the screen but it becomes rather impossible to actually define.
Yes, Seventh Son is another roll where Jeff is kind of “The Dude” and it works. Well, it worked for me. I really enjoyed this witches and witch hunters kind of tale. It even had the required sprinkle of forbidden love.
Movies of this genre are required to have quite a few special effects. Having said that, the use of special effects didn’t leave me with the feeling they had been over used or went over the top. Honestly I kind of felt they could have done more with special effects. My guess is they didn’t have that kind of budget.
