★★★★☆

The Bag Man is another one of these fantastic John Cusack movies that never gets much press. Yes, I saw John Cusack was in it and it went on my rental list. I must say that Rebecca Da Costa did an outstanding job. She was given a difficult role and she sold it. She reminds me much, both in look and speech, of Scarlett Johansson. I do hope to see her in more stuff.

Cusack is always great and I enjoy most of the roles he takes. I cannot say all because I have not seen all. I didn’t even know this movie existed until I saw it in the list on CafeDVD.com.

Know this going in, The Bag Man has a Pulp Fiction feel to it. Not quite as far out there as Pulp Fiction but out there. By that I mean we have a Russian midget that isn’t Russian. A bag nobody is supposed to look in and all kinds of weird people trying to kill John’s character while being casual about it.

Oh, and let’s not forget “the rule.” Anyone who looks in the bag has to be killed. Did I look, yes. Am I going to tell you, no, watch the movie.

It’s a simple hook but it pulls you in. “What’s inside the bag?” It’s like that big box under the tree at Christmas for a little kid in a family which celebrates Christmas. If lots of people are trying to kill him for the bag then it has to be something worth having. A mobster is paying him an insane amount of money to transport it so what could be in a tiny duffel justifying a transport fee like that?
