Review – God of War

God of War cover

★★★★☆

God of War will change your opinion of movies with subtitles. It did mine. The action is top notch. You can even read enough of the subtitles to follow the story. This story plays well in America where we like an underdog. It’s the classic “train something out of nothing to kick a bullies ass” tale.

Unlike so many of today’s movies, this one did not go over the top when it comes to special effects. Make no mistake it had plenty of them, they just fought hard to keep things believable. It was really cool to see the introduction of shoulder cannons lit with a glowing wick. Too often we in the west forget China invented gun powder.

Even if you don’t read all of the subtitles God of War is a pretty compelling treatise on military tactics and weapons evolution. After seeing shields shredded by the shoulder cannons they created shields that could deflect the bullets. They built these special hand-held weapons to reach behind shield lines and developed completely new styles of fighting. The costumes and sets must have cost a fortune.

The trailer will lead you to believe this movie is all about blood and gore. That would be a wrong impression. This is a story about one leader seeing the army he needs to beat back invaders and taking the initiative to make it.
