I watched #Unfit last night and was stunned at just how well done this documentary is. It is a must-watch for every human being. The sheer number of experts with Phds in various fields of psychology, fascism, and history bring a lot of weight to this documentary. You can watch it for free on Tubi.
Malcolm Nance, former Intelligence Officer, is a great choice for opening. He describes the vetting process military personnel have to go through to be allowed to
- fly a plane that could carry a nuclear bomb
- be trusted to work in a silo where they would have to turn a key to launch an ICBM
- to maintain nuclear weapons
- and a list of other things
Then he drops the bomb. The nuclear football bypasses Congress and all controls. It is direct communications with the nuclear weapons missile and air commands. At any time a President can crack that football open and launch it all. Despite this fact, there is no psychological or character vetting for the President entrusted with both the football and the launch codes. The only control over this is the military leaders ability to replace the codes, invalidating the ones the President currently has, if and only if they have time to do such.
This situation was explained using plain English and small words.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat and Cheryl Koos Paint the Picture
Those who know me know I’m a bit of a history fan, particularly around World War II. The history of Mussolini having “others” he targeted to rally people behind him was unknown to me. The Fascism and Authoritarian playbook is very clearly spelled out with archival footage and images. Not just Hitler and Mussolini, all of the new ones too, there are more than you may know.
Basically once a Democracy moves in one direction and leaves a few behind, Fascist authoritarian wanna-be leaders have a standard playbook that has been proven to work.
- Find or create a real/imagined hardship for the left behind.
- Target an other for all of the suffering and hardship. Both Adolf and Trump define other as anyone that isn’t white.
- Enrich themselves and their family while keeping followers frothing at the mouth
- Control the media. Let us not forget a Trump backer has already bought CBS and is now trying to purchase CNN for him.
- Repeat things three times in a row, especially the lies.
The Psychologists
I was quite stunned at how “plain English” the numerous Phd carrying psychologists explained things. I really liked the explanation of the Goldwater Rule and how it doesn’t apply to Trump. The fact that he is constantly posting on social media and jumping in front of a camera to commit wire fraud gives them an ample amount of behavioral evidence, even before one factors in the felony convictions.
Republicans
There were even Republicans in this. Notably:
- Anthony Scaramucci who served in Trump’s first White House
- Richard Painter – Ethics lawyer for George W. Bush
- George Conway – Kelly Anne Conway’s ex-husband
- William Kristol – Republican political analyst
The insights they provide, some of which coming from “in the room” are eye popping.
Summary
All human beings need to watch #Unfit. It makes a level headed case as to why Trump and his minions are a demonstrable threat to the world. Especially the segment on the pardoning of criminals and self enrichment. Binance pardon probably the most blatant example of this post movie creation.
