Review — The Secret Circle

★★★★★

I recently finished watching The Secret Circle on Tubi for free. The CW really shouldn’t have cancelled this series. Yes, a series focused on high school kids already old enough to drive doesn’t have a bit window before jumping the shark, but the ending episode of season 2 set this up for a shiny good season 3 that never came.

Witches without elders to teach them who are also riding the hormonal river of high school can have all kinds of trope/cliche drama and there was a bit of that. What saved it is the main characters could really act!

Britt Robertson

This girl is really believable. Yes, she had a lot of lines, but she also had a lot of that stupid stuff which is difficult for a newb/young actor. You know, that “green screen” kind of stuff where one holds out their hand looking like they are really concentrating and muttering some words to cast a spell. You have to trust they are going to put in special effects so you don’t look that stupid.

Phoebe Tonkin

This girl’s facial expressions rule. She plays the bad girl at heart, but shows a soft side once in a while. You gotta watch the series to see what I mean by the facial expressions. Here, you can get a brief glimpse in this promo.

Pay attention to Phoebe

The best way to describe her character is me me me me me oh shit! I have to actually care about you too?

Jessica Parker Kennedy

This girl is a treasure. She plays the girl who is unlucky in love but desperately wants it to work out. Once her BFF starts sleeping with the boyfriend she is left basically friendless and picked up by Phoebe’s character, but not in a BFF kind of way. If you don’t believe this girl can act after watching The Secret Circle, check out Black Sails.

Thomas Dekker

Gotta say I love this guy’s “teen” roles. He does well playing the guy with a decent moral compass who may or may not always be headed in the correct direction. Also check him out in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Summary

This is a well written and incredibly well acted short-lived series. The actors were all at the prime of their youth and a pleasure to watch. If you find it cheap add the set to your collection.
