The Princess is a great Sunday night flick! Joey King must have spent years studying ballet. That girl moves with grace. She had to be doing most, if not all, her own stunts. There is only so much you can fake when it comes to battle scenes with swords.
Olga Kurylenko is an actress I just love. She’s been in a lot of things, but my favorite is Hit Man. Running a very close second is Vampire Accademy. Not only is she smoking hot, she can act. One nice thing about her talent is how she disappears into a role.
The Gist
Yes, there is a lot of violence. It’s a lot of sword fights in a castle, but they are “kid friendly” sword fights. What I mean by that is when someone gets decapitated there isn’t blood spurting everywhere. The Princess aims to tell a story of female empowerment through entertaining violence. The queen allows Olga’s character to train the princess out of sight from the castle “because the king would not approve.” She was supposed to be learning to sew and host foreign dignitaries at parties.
In this classic story line the King had only daughters so he tried to marry the oldest off to a real piece of doo-doo so there would be a line of succession. You will find this story, sans the sword fights, in the first season of Downton Abbey and the real live story of Queen Elizabeth. Only sons could inherit title and property, but, Elizabeth the first changed all that. Historically, England always seems to do better under a queen than a king.
Summary
Yes, there are a few cheesy characters for comic relief, like the fat soldier that has to climb to the top of the tower but this is an enjoyable flick. The Princess has a rewatchable factor. By re-hashing a tried and true storyline they free you to just kick back and enjoy the thing. You don’t have to try and figure it out. It’s a city bus and you know the schedule. They took great pains (and saved a lot of money) to only show blood when they wanted to focus on a wound. This is not Game of Thrones action.
