★★★★☆

What can I say? I’m a guy! When you put together a movie with an Uber hot assassin, throw in some phenom fight scenes, you don’t really have to have much plot. It just works! Helen Mirren disappears so completely into her role you can’t even recognize her voice. This movie actually added in plot. Bonus!

Every so often this story line gets a new pair of black stockings and a slightly different setting. There was a movie titled La Femme Nikita. That begat a television series of the same name. The America version of the film was Point of No Return with Bridget Fonda. Gotta say I loved that movie. Pure viewing pleasure. You will find some places also list the original film as Nikita. Much of the base story line appeared in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964) in modern mainstream Marvel Comics.

In case you didn’t follow that.

Guys who read comic books in the 1960s are pre-programmed to like an Uber hot female assassin.

This spin is a little truer to the baseline story in that Anna is actually Russian. She is cruelly trained. Despite all of that she remained Uber hot and can kill entire rooms full of people at will. She is also amazingly smart.

One thing that never would have made it into the comic book universe is the additional spin that Anna likes sex with both women and men. It’s amazing how far the movie world as come here. Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde got hammered for the lesbian stuff. Yes, that’s another spin on this formula. It’s well worth a watch. People really shouldn’t have dumped on it the way they did.

If you are a guy who grew up reading comic books, you are going to love this movie.
