From time to time I lament that today’s kids, with all of their devices, don’t get to enjoy the era of really good B Grade horror flicks. I’m not talking about modern day special effects slasher gore but the black and white classics starring the master himself, Vincent Price. It was with a nostalgic smile that I noticed Commet TV Network seems to lament the same thing. Just the other night I noticed that Commet was running “House of Usher“. Tonight I see they are running “War Gods of the Deep” also known as “City in the Sea.” Perhaps some of these really were in color but I had a black and white television then. Can you even find a functioning black and white television these days?
Of course some of his best work were the Edgar Allan Poe tales like “The Raven” and “Pit and the Pendulum“. Most will remember hearing the title “House of Wax” even if they don’t remember seeing the movie. When he teamed up with Abbott and Costello the work was simply fabulous. If you haven’t had a chance to see it check out “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” where he was the voice of The Invisible Man.
People like to say that science fiction today isn’t predictive of a positive future. That most of it is Dystopian. While that may be true, we had some pretty good Dystopian fiction back in the day. If you don’t believe me check out “The Last Man on Earth.”
