★★★☆☆
It’s really hard to diss anything the Minions are in. It really is. Some twisted mind came up with animated creatures almost as endearing as Herbie the Love Bug. I was a bit disappointed with the story line about the minions looking to serve someone evil or whatever the term used was. Why? Because I’ve seen the other two movies and that really wasn’t the gist of them.
When they got to the “Finding Dory” portion of the movie things seemed to work rather well. My only issue was the one line subtext of looking for someone evil to serve. They really needed to noodle on that a bit more.
Apparently I’m not the only one who didn’t care for the premise of the back story. Various sites with 10 star systems barely have this movie cresting past 6.
In short, the studio rushed to ring the cash register and may have squandered the fan base of the Minions. Yes, even adults liked the Minions with the operative word being “liked.”
Minions Reality
Minions are comic relief, not central story characters. Sub-plots and background stories is where they can shine. These stories are short or they are running gags appearing for only a few seconds at a time. They are meant to be skits like the running corner cartoon gags of Mad and Cracked magazines.
Honestly, they probably could have pulled off a whole movie if someone would have just thought for a moment about the plot line. It would be a bit of a stretch though. You can’t make a full meal out of the seasoning.
