★★★★☆
Silver Linings Playbook is just plain great! Jenifer Lawrence should have gotten an Oscar for this role. Bradley Cooper delivers his usual phenom performance as well. Honestly, who doesn’t like Robert De Niro in an old man role? This movie did everything right. The writers produced a good script and casting bagged actors of legendary quality to fill the roles.
Honestly, there is almost no way to review Silver Linings Playbook without giving it away. A fully dysfunctional man, Pat (Bradley Cooper), has lost everything. His home, wife, and job along with a major portion of his sanity. His friends and family try to pair him up with a near equally troubled woman in the hopes two broken people can end up as a complete person. Not as far fetched a story as it sounds if you’ve seen a bit of life.
Adding to the humor and joy of this movie their family and friends aren’t fully functional either. Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) manages to inject herself in his life after the straight forward approach of offering to have sex with him fails. In the end she manages to tie his family’s financial salvation to her dream of a partner in a dance contest.
Trying not to give too much away, but, it is not until the very end when you learn just how far the friends and family went to throw these two people together and the fact she was a more than willing participant.
Yes there is a bit of romance, but thankfully, this isn’t a chick-flick. Real men can laugh and enjoy this movie.
