Night Moves – Long slow road to nowhere.

I put Night Moves on my rental list because I liked Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” and “Now You See Me.” His edginess acting style reminds me a bit of Nicholas Cage but not quite so over the top. Well he is well on his way to that path with this movie. No, not for the action, but for the roles in movies nobody gets.

Most people won’t notice it, but the movie did get one thing very correct. The whole wearing-the-same-clothes-for-days-even-sleeping-in-them aspect of the grunge culture. I have noticed that aspect of the grunge scene over the years. Personally, I don’t care what you wear, just change clothes and shower each day. Oh, and don’t forget to wash the clothes you just took off before putting them back on.

I might even be able to overlook the never-shave aspect some of the women in the “earthy grunge” culture adopt. Well . . . no, I really can’t. A friend of mine dated one of these women during my twenties. I still can’t unsee her stretched out on a recliner by the grill at an Independence Day gathering. Leg hairs poking through the white sweat socks and hairy arm pits in the tank top. Couldn’t really eat after that.

Be it a book or a movie, the one thing you don’t want an audience to ask when they’ve finished reading or watching is “what was that all about?” That’s the question I asked. Was the ending supposed to be scary? (No, I won’t give it away.) Were we simply supposed to ask questions? If so what questions?

There have been quite a few “socially oriented” movies out there as of late. Probably one of the best known would be “Snitch” staring Dwayne Johnson. What the majority of the better ones has is a “mission statement” at the end. In a book we would call this an epilogue. Something which starts out:

Each year blah blah blah

A simple text screen stating that could have saved this movie. At the end of this movie I was left with the impression only a handful of people involved in its creation knew what the mission or purpose of this movie was.
