★★★★☆
Heist is a well done movie. What it lacks in special effects it makes up for with story line and quality acting. Rather than relying on one big name to carry the story they gathered an ensemble cast and everybody delivers.
Heist is something of a noir style film. Not quite as noir as Stacy Keach’s Mike Hammer, but noir nonetheless. It’s not just a robbery, that is only a tiny piece of the story. More to the point this movie is something of a chess match trying to figure out who is going to cross who next. In truth you are watching a very long con unfold and you won’t know what it was until the very end.
Phenomenal writing and great acting. Heist can be forgiven the lack of things blowing up and high speed car chases. Gene Hackman has really become a bankable actor. It was also great to see Danny DeVito get a chance to flex his acting muscles in something other than comedy. While I’ve probably seen him many times I must confess to not noticing Delroy Lindo. He disappears so completely into character you only see the character he plays.
Definitely put this on your rental list.
