Chill Factor is an odd little movie that was strangely enjoyable. I don’t know what has possessed Cuba Gooding Jr. to pursue a series of formula acting roles but this one kind of worked. As an actor he certainly has far greater roles. Perhaps these roles are all he is being offered lately. Sad. He is a very capable actor. Certainly his role in Men of Honor stands full torso above this role.
Having said that, this movie is worth a watch. It adds new meaning to the phrase “Elvis has left the building
The concept of dastardly people trying to covertly transport a canister of bioweapon which must be kept below 50 degrees Fahrenheit isn’t such a stretch in today’s world. It was a much bigger stretch in 1999 when this movie was made.
One could even argue that the covert transportation and hand-off going completely sideways isn’t that much of a stretch. A big part of a covert operation is compartmentalizing each piece so only a few have the full picture. The very nature of the business means it is prone to failure.
Having two of life’s biggest screw ups end up with the thing in the back of an ice cream truck looking for a safe method of disposal is a stretch no matter who is reaching, but, that is where the comedy comes in. There are laughs o’plenty in this movie. It also has the obligatory chase scenes and shoot outs.
Put it on your rental list for a six pack and pizza kind of evening.
