★★★★☆
I must admit to not having seen Labyrinth while David Bowie was alive. The movie was recently on the Comet television network so I watched it. Actually I watched it on a couple of different nights. I have to say that this is a movie completely made for David Bowie. He shines in all his early Bowie-ness. Labyrinth is kind of like a long MTV video, but one with an actual plot.
Is anyone else old enough to remember when MTV actually played music videos? Sad to see just how far this ground breaker has fallen. Just another fake reality network now.
One thing kept nagging me as I watched the movie. I know that girl from somewhere. Well, I was right. Just a scant 2 years prior she played Young Deborah in Once Upon a Time in America, quite possibly the best movie ever made. No. It is the best movie ever made. She also played Maddy Bowen in “Blood Diamond.”
I must say this is a cute movie for kids. Granted the kids have to be old enough to not get scared by comical goblins and Keystone Cops type violence. It is yet another good hearted movie trying to teach children that material things aren’t important as family. Doesn’t matter if it is a family you are thrust into by marriage (Sarah), born into (Toby) or the one you make (Sarah and her goblin friends.)
You really need to put this movie on your rental list for family movie night. Yes, it was rated PG.
