The human mind is an incredible thing when it comes to wandering. Sometimes we get so focused on what we aren’t we forget to be thankful for the many other things we aren’t. Think about it. No matter how bad your current life seems at the moment, be glad you were not born a skunk. I did not know this until I was watching a television station out of the Champaign area but, the season never closes on skunk, at least in Illinois. Before writing this I did a quick search and found the DNR calender for skunk and coyote. You will note it starts January 1st and ends December 31st with no time restrictions. The poor stinky little skunk can be shot 24×7 with pretty much whatever is handy since I didn’t notice any weapons restrictions listed. Same goes for the coyote, but, you are probably going to want something a bit bigger than a .22 to bring one of them down unless you are an awesome shot.

Most bible based religions have the concepts of Heaven and Hell. Then there are other religions which believe in reincarnation. Hell gets explored by writers in many different ways. Hopefully you’ve all read my “River of Souls” post to learn one exploration considered continuing the souls within some sort of container jar, unable to either die or actually do anything. They would simply exist, unable to ever again know the warmth and comfort of another human being.

One thing I don’t see often explored or at least uniquely explored in today’s fiction is the concept of reincarnation. It doesn’t matter what your religion is or if it exists at all, the concept of reincarnation offers some intriguing story lines. You can even blend it a bit with the concept of Hell from “River of Souls.” Think about it. Your story can have evil MBAs and Wall Street bankers who brought about the global recession be reincarnated to have a long life as anaerobic bacterium in a septic system. If you are not old enough to know what a septic system is or what anaerobic bacterium feed on in there, save this post for future enjoyment.

So, today, when everything you touched turned to shit and you think the world is against you, just remember what waits for MBAs and Wall Street bankers in the next life.
