It begins with darkness. Are they dead, or trapped inside a horrible dream?
\nNo one can hear them, see them. Has the world forgotten them? Are they
\ninvisible? Not to the Soul Collector. They have stepped into her Kingdom,
\nand she is waiting for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter 1<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest boxing match of the season landed on a Friday the 13th. But a
\nlittle thing like superstition had no effect on the newcomer, Jonathan
\nBayfield, and heavyweight champion, Lou Turlock. The fight fans agreed,
\nstomping their feet while chanting \u201cFight! Fight! Fight!\u201d <\/i>inside
\nthe packed, brightly lit arena. Sportscasters got up close and personal,
\nclaiming ringside seats for an in-your-face camera view.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield locked his gaze on his opponent, his right ear taking in
\nCoach\u2019s words.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGo to the body. Don\u2019t overreach. Straight punches. Got
\nit?\u201d Coach gripped Bayfield\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHey, eyes on me.
\nDon\u2019t let him get inside your head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield looked at Coach, giving him a slow nod, then reverted his focus
\nback to Turlock, transmitting a defiant \u201cthis fight is mine\u201d
\nglare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turlock reciprocated, taunting Bayfield with a \u201cwe\u2019ll
\nsee\u201d sneer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The vein in Bayfield\u2019s forehead pulsed, spreading a surge of heat
\nthrough his body. A fist to the gut. That would show the arrogant prick he
\nhad something to worry about, rattled through his mind. The ringside bell
\nshattered Bayfield\u2019s thoughts, bouncing him to his feet. Turlock came
\nout swinging, and Bayfield pivoted while throwing a right hook, catching the
\ncorner of Turlock\u2019s jaw. Turlock countered, landing a jab to
\nBayfield\u2019s chest. The blow forced the air from Bayfield\u2019s lungs,
\nhis body folding in half. But he quickly sprang upright, shaking off the
\nsting, and fired off several consecutive punches straight into
\nTurlock\u2019s gut.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turlock wobbled back and the crowd roared, shouting, \u201cWay to go,
\nBayfield!\u201d Bayfield bounced back and forth on his feet, tapping his
\ngloves to the crowd\u2019s cheers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turlock\u2019s own pulse battered against his eardrums. Where was the
\nrespect? He was a champion, and these morons had the nerve to cheer for a
\nnobody, some kid who\u2019d happened to land himself a good manager.
\nAdrenaline tipped the scales on the fighter\u2019s rationality. Cognitive
\nthought ceased. The whites of his eyes blazed as he hurtled his body like a
\nweapon, slamming his skull against the kid\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

A crackling of bones ricocheted inside the ring, causing an eerie silence
\nto fall over the area, before shouts from the crowd came from all sides. The
\nref barged in, spewing spit as he held Turlock back. Turlock\u2019s gaze
\ntraveled over the ref\u2019s shoulder, colliding with the kid\u2019s
\nvacant stare. He knew that look; like no one was home. He\u2019d seen it in
\nhis grandpa\u2019s eyes before he\u2019d taken his last breath. An icy
\nchill scurried down Turlock\u2019s spine as the kid crumpled to the mat.
\nTurlock stood still as medics, judges, and more refs flooded the ring,
\nsurrounding the kid\u2019s lifeless body.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t find a pulse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStart compressions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Coach pushed his way through the chaos to Bayfield. \u201cJonathan, can
\nyou hear me?\u201d Coach\u2019s voice shook. \u201cStay\u2026\u201d He
\nblew out a breath. \u201cStay with me, buddy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield\u2019s eyelids flew open, and with one push, he was on his feet.
\nA weird and wonderful lightness affected his body, which made no sense,
\nbeing as he weighed 200 pounds. Sounds rushed back, bouncing against his
\neardrums and forming words\u2014Coach\u2019s words.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHold on, Jonathan. The ambulance is on its way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield focused his attention on Coach. \u201cAmbulance?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust hold on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield laughed. \u201cWhat are you talking about? Coach, I\u2019m
\nstanding right behind you. Turn around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Coach made no attempt, his focus centered on something in front of
\nhim.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield\u2019s tone rose an octave. \u201cCoach, what
\ngives?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

No answer came, not from Coach, nor from any of the other people hovering
\naround him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield skimmed the faces of the crowd, searching for a clue or hint to
\nenlighten him on what the hell was happening. Why was everyone ignoring
\nhim?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStep aside, people,\u201d security broadcasted with authority,
\nherding the crowd back. \u201cLet the paramedics through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cParamedics? Who got hurt?\u201d Bayfield\u2019s gaze darted to
\nTurlock, where men in dark blue suits surrounded him, escorting him toward
\nthe locker room. Bayfield let his gaze grow distant. He had no memory of the
\nfight ending, and his boxing gloves were missing. No one acknowledged him.
\nNone of it made sense. He gave his head a good shake. \u201cGotta be an
\nexplanation for all this.\u201d As his vision cleared, it centered on the
\nparamedics rolling a lifeless body away on a stretcher\u2014his body!<\/span><\/p>\n

His brain skidded to a stop\u2014no pause, no rewind, no press play. Just
\na complete stop. Was he being punk\u2019d? Was this some kind of sick joke?
\nHis gaze followed the stretcher, catching the tail end of it slipping inside
\nthe ambulance. Coach followed, his hands running through his salt and pepper
\nhair. The look of sheer terror etched across Coach\u2019s pale face slammed
\nagainst Bayfield\u2019s brain. This was no joke. This was real, and that
\nambulance was about to take off with his body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bayfield launched across the ring, catapulting over the ropes and sailing
\ninside the ambulance seconds before the doors closed and the siren sang out.
\nHe plopped down next to Coach, his gaze transfixed on his own body lying
\nacross from him. One massive, purplish bruise swallowed up his bloodied
\nforehead. Bayfield couldn\u2019t explain it\u2014couldn\u2019t understand
\nit. \u201cI\u2019m sitting here, but also lying there. How is that
\npossible?\u201d In a momentary shift, his eyes found Coach\u2019s, thirsty
\nfor an answer. None came. The silence sent a chill down Bayfield\u2019s
\nspine.<\/span><\/p>\n

A paramedic with tattoos blazing down his arms informed, \u201cGot a
\npulse,\u201d\u2014his intense blue eyes narrowed\u2014\u201cbut
\nit\u2019s thready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paramedic behind the wheel, sprouting a six o\u2019clock shadow,
\nlobbed a reply over his shoulder. \u201cLetting dispatch know we\u2019re
\nfive minutes out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Coach gripped his hands, squeezing the blood from his knuckles.
\n\u201cGetting a pulse, even a weak one, is a good thing,
\nright?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The tattooed paramedic waited a good minute before saying, \u201cFor now,
\nyes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
