Sociology professor Felix Thayer is brilliant but hateful. A near genius in
\nhis field, but impossible to get along with. When his colleague Michael
\nHartness is found murdered in his office, it doesn’t surprise anyone that
\nThayer is arrested for the crime. Everyone who knew the two men pretty much
\nsaw that coming. But why would Thayer have committed the murder in a manner
\nso careless as to almost ensure his being fingered as the culprit? It’s
\nalmost as if the guy wanted to be caught.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s what Thayer’s wife needs to know. She doesn’t really care whether
\nher husband’s guilty. She just has to know why he’d be so careless and hires
\nSam Quinton, full-time gym owner, part-time private eye, and former
\nprofessional wrestler, to find out. But as Quinton investigates the crime,
\nhe finds there may be more to the affair than the animosity of two men. And
\nwhen the local Mafia begins dogging his steps, he figures he’s on the trail
\nof something that someone wants kept under wraps.<\/span><\/p>\n

When she got close, I could see her eyes were a striking royal blue color.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Quinton?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d I grabbed a water bottle from underneath the bench I was sitting on and took a swig.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m interested in hiring you,\u201d the woman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t do individual sessions,\u201d I said. \u201cI can take you over to talk to Lisa. She handles most of our formal scheduling, and I\u2019m sure –\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I,\u201d the woman paused, took a breath and shook her head a trifle. \u201cI\u2019m not looking for a trainer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAah,\u201d I said, the light dawning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need a detective.\u201d She peered closer at me while keeping her expression blank. I was wearing gym shorts, a tank-top tee shirt and white Puma\u2019s. My face was still a little flushed from the curls, and at the end of a one-hour workout I probably needed a shower.<\/p>\n

\u201cPardon my appearance,\u201d I said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting to see any clients this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman looked around, her gaze sweeping the gym, before coming back to me. \u201cYou are a detective, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I need to hire you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I perked up at the word \u201cneed,\u201d not \u201cwant.\u201d \u201cWhat sort of work?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She frowned as she looked down at me. \u201cDetective work. That is what you do, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head. \u201cWhat I meant was what sort of case. What do you need help with?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face crumpled a bit, and a hint of moisture seeped into her eyes. She shook her head slightly, and I wondered if she was going to turn around and head back out the door.<\/p>\n

Then she took a deep breath, squared her shoulders and stood up a little straighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Susan Thayer,\u201d she said. \u201cDoes that explain the kind of work I need?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs in Dr. Felix Thayer?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She nodded, and looking closely, I could see two parallel tears sliding down her cheeks.<\/p>\n

Oh yeah. I don\u2019t know if that explained everything, but it explained an awful lot.<\/p>\n

A high-school teacher, former college instructor, and fiction writer, Kevin
\nR. Doyle is the author of numerous short horror stories. He\u2019s also
\nwritten three crime thrillers, The Group, When You Have to Go There, and And
\nthe Devil Walks Away, and one horror novel, The Litter. In the last few
\nyears, he\u2019s begun working on the Sam Quinton private eye series,
\npublished by Camel Press. The first Quinton book, Squatter\u2019s Rights,
\nwas nominated for the 2021 Shamus award for Best First PI Novel.\u00a0 The
