{"id":327,"date":"2016-03-22T07:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-03-22T13:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/?p=327"},"modified":"2017-08-12T12:15:33","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T18:15:33","slug":"experience-more-of-wind-and-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/technology\/experience-more-of-wind-and-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Experience:  More of Wind and Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who&#8217;s ever studied the art of navigation is familiar with the name, Bowditch. \u00a0Years ago, one of my three sons was intrigued by numbers (and still is). \u00a0When he was ten years old, he read a book titled, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Carry on Mr. Bowditch<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, about the life\u00a0of the famous mathematician and navigator, Nathaniel Bowditch. \u00a0In all his youth and innocence, my son was eager to\u00a0share his fascination, asking me many questions about such things as &#8220;hour angles&#8221; and &#8220;sight reduction tables.&#8221; \u00a0Why my son might have thought I knew of such things, I&#8217;ll chalk up as a child&#8217;s naivety and the\u00a0belief that adults know lots of stuff. \u00a0In my case, I really didn&#8217;t\u00a0know much, but I did have\u00a0some experience with celestial navigation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-330 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cutback-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"Cutback\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cutback-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cutback.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In my younger years, being\u00a0a surfer with an appetite for adventure, I also latched on to the idea that becoming a competent sailor was the perfect match for the dream I had brewing. \u00a0If I were to ever be in a position to sail to uncharted surf breaks located on the on the reefs of\u00a0known\u00a0islands, I&#8217;d need to learn a thing or two about sailing and navigating ocean going sailboats. \u00a0I&#8217;d read the &#8220;National Geographic&#8221; series about Robin Lee Graham&#8217;s solo circumnavigation in his 24&#8242; sloop\u00a0<strong>Dove<\/strong>. \u00a0By the time I was fourteen years old, I&#8217;d read his book and seen the movie too. Because he had a nice ocean going sailboat, I\u00a0felt\u00a0lucky to have met that other surfer\u00a0I mentioned in my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/experience-secret-spots-surf-spots\/\">previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That surfer\/sailor&#8217;s\u00a0name was Michael and he was in his second year teaching third graders at an elementary school in Alameda, California. He and I sailed and surfed together for a few months, which got me\u00a0connected with\u00a0ther boat owners with bigger faster boats. \u00a0Eventually the associations landed me a regular yacht racing gig and a job at a local sailmaker&#8217;s loft. \u00a0Looking back, I now realize just how much a person&#8217;s successes can depend on life&#8217;s chance encounters. \u00a0By the time I found myself working at <strong>Pineapple Sails<\/strong>, owned and operated by Kame Richards, I was a freshly minted\u00a0high school grad with no intention of ever attending college.<\/p>\n<p>Those were the years before young people in that line of skilled labor became &#8220;paid&#8221; crew on racing yachts. \u00a0In our day, we sailed for the pure joy of it. Most of the customers of\u00a0<strong>Pineapple Sails\u00a0<\/strong>who needed crew, could draw from Kame&#8217;s staff. \u00a0I was one of them and decided early on I was in the right place to fulfill my dreams. \u00a0However, by then\u00a0I no longer had time to surf. \u00a0In fact I&#8217;d nearly abandoned it all together.\u00a0For me, the\u00a0cool thing about working in an industry with myriad problems of fluid dynamics (Aero and Hydro), physics, material manufacturing, and fundamental geometry was the endless possibility for improvements. \u00a0I watched my boss and listened. \u00a0Kame was and still is a genius with a passion for his art.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-329 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"1980\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980-624x446.jpg 624w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1980.jpg 1025w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Back in the early sixties, there were a few guys with aerospace engineering backgrounds who applied their skills toward their passion for building better surfboards. \u00a0Jim Drake was one of them and has been credited for becoming an early pioneer of &#8220;wind-surfing&#8221;. Similarly, the\u00a0&#8217;70s represented a magical era for the world of sailing. \u00a0There were revolutionary leaps in technology and imagination that resulted in the Ultra-Light Displacement Boats (ULDB). \u00a0Being raised as a Central Californian, I latched on to the magic of discovering that a guy named Bill Lee of Santa Cruz, California \u00a0would arguably be labeled the &#8220;Father&#8221; of the ULDB sailboat. <em><strong>Merlin <\/strong><\/em>was one of the boats he designed and sailed to win the &#8217;76 Transpac. \u00a0Traditionalists shunned the entry so much as to forecast that such a light boat with a long waterline and powerful sailplan would break up in the early stages of the race. \u00a0Lee proved them wrong and set the bar for a new mindset that revolutionized competitive sailing forever.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many stories about the creative personalities that designed, built, and sailed these boats that the lore will never be lost by those connected with boat names such as, \u00a0<em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chutzpah<\/span><\/strong><\/em> and <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Panache<\/strong><\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did I reap the benefits of being exposed to these technologic evolutions, I was surrounded by talent, which I envied but never imagined to\u00a0be included in such circles. \u00a0I was fortunate to have spent summers working with the young talented college aged sailors that my boss, Kame hired. \u00a0His intent was for\u00a0all of us to\u00a0learn from them. I&#8217;d name them but there were too many &#8211; just look up the roster of Yachts women of the year, Olympic &#8217;49er USA sailors, and any other Google query you can think of, and you&#8217;ll find names of famous sailors who worked at <strong>Pineapple<\/strong> for a summer or two.<\/p>\n<p>What does a young inquisitive person working in skilled labor do when they discover their passion has evolved from one set of goals to another? \u00a0At age 19 I&#8217;d completed a celestial navigation course and accepted a position on a 41&#8242; cruising sailboat bound for Australia. \u00a0I was one of a crew of 4 and made it to Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii in 13 days. \u00a0As the only crew member who could sight\u00a0the sun\u00a0or a celestial body with a sextant, calculate the parallax of a moon, traverse the H.O.249 Sight Reduction Table, and plot a line of position, I was exhausted when we arrived. \u00a0I was also enlightened.<\/p>\n<p>These days anyone can navigate across an ocean without the knowledge or skill to take a sight with a sextant and convert it into a piece of information to derive a position. These days all it takes is a GPS receiver and some sort of software to convert an RF signal into a Lat\/Long. \u00a0I say good for those with a sense of adventure. \u00a0Sailing across an ocean is a big enough challenge as it is.<\/p>\n<p>At a young age, the experience of an adventure and the discovery of demonstrating, not for anyone but myself, that using the education I&#8217;d acquired to navigate from point A to point B on a sphere, amounted to something. \u00a0I was\u00a0sufficiently\u00a0motivated to return to school and earn an ROTC scholarship, a degree, and a career path in the United States Air Force that led to \u00a0flying the U-2 Dragon Lady.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-334 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/252823_167739889956858_2230957_n-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"252823_167739889956858_2230957_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/252823_167739889956858_2230957_n-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/252823_167739889956858_2230957_n-624x452.jpg 624w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/252823_167739889956858_2230957_n.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All said, if I were to venture out in the oceans again aboard a small sailboat,\u00a0I&#8217;d still want to bring along a Nautical Almanac, a set of Sight Reduction Tables, a Chronometer (or Short Wave Receiver for WWV time constant), and a sextant. \u00a0I&#8217;d use these traditional tools to compare my calculated position with the one from the GPS and see who wins.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"line-height: 1.71429; font-size: 1rem;\">The author retired from USAF in 2009. \u00a0He taught all three of his sons to surf, sail, and fly. \u00a0Though they all still surf, each have taken different professional paths &#8211;
