{"id":1458,"date":"2017-08-01T07:21:51","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T13:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2017-12-02T12:50:19","modified_gmt":"2017-12-02T18:50:19","slug":"flash-fiction-2-prompt-woods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/fiction\/flash-fiction-2-prompt-woods\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash Fiction #2:  Prompt &#8211; &#8220;Woods&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In Oregon, we call it the \u201cForest.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Why?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Roof, Ruff, Tomayto, Tomahto, and hey, who could argue with <strong>Bill Bryson<\/strong> who wrote a most enjoyable book about a hike he took on the Appalachian Trail titled,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Walk in the Woods<\/span>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1483\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1483 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/MatisseWoods-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/MatisseWoods-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/interestingauthors.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/MatisseWoods.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forest Park: America&#8217;s largest forested city trail system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That was the beginning of a conversation I was having with an outdoorsy gal I met just a week before to find out if she was really who she said she was.\u00a0 My plan?\u00a0 Yep, you guessed it. \u00a0Take the lady on a \u201cwalk in the woods,\u201d and show her a real forest.\u00a0 Not one of those three generations of renewable cedars in her home country, but rather an \u201cold growth\u201d forest of the Oregon variety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeth, what is that up there?\u201d Andrea asked as she pointed up to the bright blue between the stands of old growth Doug Firs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n<p>It was true.\u00a0 I really had a tough time processing what we were both staring at.\u00a0 Then suddenly it occurred to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTree Sitters,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are called \u2018Tree Sitters,\u2019 \u00a0activists who climb the trees and build camp platforms. They live in the trees to keep the loggers from cutting them down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrea\u2019s question didn\u2019t sound like she was interested in discovering the story behind the person living 125 feet above the ground.\u00a0 I could tell by her tone that she\u2019d never considered that a person could be so committed to save a tree.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t respond to her question.<\/p>\n<p>We just kept walking, up the path through the forest breathing in the fresh air. \u00a0Both of us with our heads turned up gazing in wonder.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Gregory S.
